HEALTH BENEFITS OF PARSLEY TEA

Though fresh parsley used mainly as a garnish adds a unique flavour to deliciously steamy stews, soups or casseroles, it does have numerous curative benefits for health. Not only is it an excellent source of vitamins A and K, parsley also supplies small amounts of potassium, iron and fiber. Besides using it as a flavorful herb in your meals, you may use it to make a steaming hot cup of tea that tastes delicious and is good for you. The parsley will infuse the tea with the same nutrients you'd get if you ate it raw. Ask your doctor before drinking it to make sure it won't interfere with any treatment or aggravate a medical condition.

How to Make Parsley Tea

Place approximately 1/4 cup of fresh parsley in an infusion basket. Put the basket into a cup or tea pot and pour 1 cup of filtered boiling water over it. Allow to steep for 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the basket to remove the parsley. You may want to sweeten with honey and a fresh bit of lemon juice to enhance the flavor. Enjoy!

Nutritional Facts of Parsley

Parsley belongs to the same family as celery, coriander and cilantro. Botanically known as the Petroselinum crispus, parsley receives its name from the Greek “rock celery”.  There are two main types of Parsley namely curly and flat Italian variety.  Nevertheless, the flat Parsley is more aromatic, tasting less bitter when compared to the curly type.

Parsley tea contains essential nutritive elements apart from an array of antioxidants that boosts optimal health. Comprising of Beta-carotene, B12 vitamins, Vitamin C, several fatty acids, antioxidants, flavonoids, phytonutrients Parsley contains volatile oils in the form of alpha-thujene, eugenol, myristicin and limonene.

Parsley is also rich in the source of two vital nutrients: vitamin C and vitamin A. These are both powerful antioxidants that destroy free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for the development of many medical conditions, including atherosclerosis, diabetes and colon and cervical cancer and asthma.

Health Benefits of Parsley Tea

Immune health
Due to the existence of Vitamin C in abundance, a cup of parsley tea gives relief from common cold and prevents the attack of flu.

Boosts Immune System
The powerful antioxidant elements in Parsley boost immune health by destroying the harmful disease-causing free radicals, preventing the attack of serious ailments.

Anti-Inflammatory
Owing to high vitamin c content, Parsley tea helps reduce inflammation in the body.  Hence, the tea is effective in treating anti-inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, Gout and Rheumatoid arthritis.  Consuming two cups of parsley tea every day, with a dash of honey or lemon, to avoid bitterness, reduces the levels of uric acid in the body, thus alleviating pain In addition to this the tea also acts as a protective agent safeguarding the occurrences of anti-inflammatory diseases.

Strengthen Bone
Since Parsley is a rich source of vitamin K, consuming a cup of parsley tea not only promotes bone formation but also helps keep them strong.

Combat Cancer
Myristicin, the volatile oil in Parsley, stimulates an enzyme that stabilises benzopyrenes, the carcinogens, present in Cigarette smoke.  According to the University of Maryland, the flavonoids like limonene prevent reproduction of cancer cells by blocking the proteins.

Absorption of Iron
Since the tea is high in iron, it performs the role of a blood purifier and enables effective absorption of iron, curing anaemic conditions. This is mainly because of the Vitamin C compounds present in Parsley.

Reduces Cholesterol
Due to the potent antioxidant substances that exist in Parsley a cup of refreshing herb tea eliminates the risk of developing cardiac related problems by maintaining healthy blood cholesterol levels.

Effective Body Cleanser
Rich in Antioxidant compounds, including Vitamins C and A, drinking a cup of Parsley tea rids the body of unwanted toxins from the body boosting health inside out.

Women’s Health
One of the components of estrogen, Apiol, found in Parsley prevents irregularities in the menstrual cycle since the herb has the ability for uterine contractions.  Hence, it is ideal for women post delivery.  Apart from this, the herbal infusion also helps alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome such as puffiness and uneasiness.

Diuretic Effects
Owing to the presence of high amounts of potassium in Parsley, Regular consumption of Tea infused with the herb helps flush out excess fluids from the body. This leads to excellent weight loss results.

Caution
If you want to use parsley tea, always tell your doctor about medications and other herbal remedies you use to be sure it won't interact with them.

Don't drink more than a cup of parsley tea each day because it can cause health complications. Pregnant and nursing women must avoid consuming the herbal tea since it contains substances such as apiol and myristicin pose a threat to uterine contractions resulting in miscarriage or premature labour.

WORST FOODS FOR SKIN

With growing awareness, people have become more health as well as beauty conscious. In this aesthetic-loving age, it is very essential to let people know that what they consider 'aesthetic' is also related to their skin.

Importantly, manifestations of your nutritional status as well as body's nutritional needs reflect on the skin's health.

Our skin is a reflection of our overall health, so it makes sense that there are such things as the worst foods for your skin. While there are lot of factors that contribute to the way our skin looks, consuming too much of the wrong type of foods can definitely contribute to skin problems like acne or unhealthy looking skin. If you think your diet might be affecting your complexion, take a look at the few worst foods for your skin.

Foods that disturb water balance
Dehydration causes drying of the skin. Wrinkling is a common side effect of lack of moisture in the skin. Dehydration and acne are interlinked because drying of skin and dead skin cells coming together cause acne.

Excess Salt
Excess salt retains additional fluid in the body causing swelling and a puffy look to the skin. The skin texture is spoilt on prolonged salt abuse. Papads, pickles, salted foods, table salt, brined/canned food products are the potential sources of salt to the body.

Excess Caffeine
Caffeine is a known stimulant which increase the cortisol production in the body and enhances the ageing process by thinning the skin. This dehydrates the skin and even leads to wrinkling. In addition, caffeine is a diuretic which further increases the risk of dehydration. So beware when you decide to go for an additional helping of coffee, tea or chocolates too!

Alcohol
Alcohol inhibits the Anti-Diuretic Hormone secretion thus causing dehydration. Furthermore, it also causes vasodilatation, which then leads to excess water loss through the skin. This is also known to be a contributing factor to acute phases of psoriasis as per the American Academy of Dermatology.

Foods with high glycemic load
These foods cause drastic fluctuations in the blood sugar. This leads to excess secretion of insulin and androgens during the high and low bouts respectivel. A major reason to contribute to surplus sebum production, enhanced skin cell division and aggregation of dead skin cells - leading to acne.

Excess Sugar
Not literally only sugar, but even jaggery and honey! Eating a lot of sugar (raisins, soda, honey, agave nectar) or simple carbs (bagels, pasta, cupcakes) can throw off your insulin levels, which can lead to inflammation both inside the body as well as on your face. Giving up sweets and starches can also help you lose weight.

Processed foods
Refined or processed foods like maida (refined flour) and its products, canned and sweetened fruits and juices are low in fiber content, thus increasing the glycemic load. Moreover the processed foods are often high in their salt/sodium content. As a by-product of processing, these also lose the nutrients of the parent food products important for skin health.

Aerated beverages
Aerated drinks can be nightmarish for the skin. Exceptions are the so-called diet-cokes and the family. But their caffeine content makes them the villains for skin health.

Foods that enhance free-radical production
Free radicals are known to disrupt the skin's structure by destroying collagen and elastin; the fibres that support the skin structure. They also cause damage at the cellular level by disturbing the DNA structure.

Excess use of artificial sweeteners/colours/flavours
These chemicals lodge into our systems and are difficult to flush out of our body. Overuse and inability to flush them out in time could be the pre-cursor for free radical production.

Red Meat
Consumption of red meat, especially fat-laden parts can lead to inflammatory reactions. This is by the virtue of saturated fat content of meats. In excess, free radicals generated overpowers the anti-oxidation capacity of the free radical scavengers in the body.

Heating meat at high temperatures produces a chemical reaction between the fat and protein that results in compounds called "advanced glycation end products" (AGES). they're linked to oxidative stress and inflammation that can make your skin look ruddier, duller and more wrinkled -- older, in general. (AGES can also increase your risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.) These compounds are found in French fries, potato chips, deep-fried chicken and other foods that have been cooked in oil at extremely high temperatures.

Fried foods and Hydrogenated fat
Excess heat application like during frying of foods and production of hydrogenated fat (margarine, vanaspati ghee) leads to oxidation of fatty acids and destruction of anti-oxidant nutrients like vitamin E, omega-3 fats present in the oils/fat. Generation of trans-fatty acids encourages free radical production by fueling the oxidation process. Avoid buying cookies, crackers, baked goods or anything else that has hydrogenated oil or trans-fats on the ingredients list.

Crash diets
Crash diets affect skin health through all the 3 mechanisms discussed before. Dehydration is a side effect of crash dieting. Studies suggest that consuming lot of water throughout this phase barely helps and this is because body doesn't retain water due to nutritional deprivation and lack of balanced meals.

Crash diets are known to cause dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar levels, no wonder acnes are so common amongst anorexics and bulemics. Skin requires antioxidant nutrients (Vitamins A, C, E, zinc, selenium, etc.) that scavenge the free radicals. The Journal of Investigative Dermatology (Feb, 2005) testifies that long term vitamins C and E intake is linked with reduced incidence of sunburns from exposure to UVB radiation. These antioxidant vitamins help protect against DNA damage by protecting the skin structure. Crash diets are known to cause nutrient deficiencies and thereby the lack of antioxidants too.

Many brands of chips, crackers and popcorn are loaded with sodium, which can cause water retention. If you're prone to puffiness all over, it will be most noticeable under the eyes, because the skin there is very thin, and it doesn't take much to cause swelling.these kinds of greasy snacks are likely to have been cooked at high temps, and thus contain AGES, which could result in a double-whammy of puffiness and redness.

Roasted, unsalted mixed nuts can satisfy your snack craving without the side effects.

Consider intake of yogurt insteed of taking skim milk, skim milk shown the strongest link with skin flare-ups where as yogurt seems to have the weakest effect.

You don't need to go on a raw-food diet, but it might not be a bad idea to eat grilled foods in moderation (deep-fried, too, but you knew that).

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WITH VEGETABLE

Your immunity system keeps you healthy and strong. It can prevent acute viral and bacterial infections like a cold or a flu as well as play an important role in long term health by preventing chronic diseases such as autoimmune diseases and cancer.

Having chronic digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, and dyspepsia could all lead to immune system diseases.

It can’t be said enough that eating good food leads to good health and is one of the best immune system boosters.

Cruciferous vegetables are the gold standard in immune-boosting vegetables.Although all vegetables have nutrients and some protective powers. Cruciferous vegetables have a special chemical composition: They have sulfur-containing compounds that are responsible for their pungent flavors. When they’re broken down by biting, blending, or chopping, a chemical reaction occurs that converts these sulfur-containing compounds into isothiocyanates (ITCs). ITCs prevent and knock out cancer and have infinite proven immune-boosting capabilities.
Immune System Defense

They contain antiviral and antibacterial agents that keep you disease free. Adding the following cruciferous vegetables to your daily plate is like taking an anticancer pill: arugula, beet greens, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, radishes, red cabbage, turnip greens, or watercress.

Here are few vegetables which helps in increase immune system:

Garlic is a natural antiseptic; it prevents cancer, fights infection, and prevents colds. Research also states that garlic may prevent or decrease chronic diseases associated with age, such as atherosclerosis, stroke, cancer, immune disorders, brain aging, cataracts, and arthritis.

Onions:
Rich in quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that may reduce the risk of cancer. Like garlic, onions also contain the amazing compound allicin. Red and purple onions contain anthocyanins, the same antioxidants that make berries so robust in healing powers. In addition to being extraordinary at preventing and healing cancer, the quercetin contained in onion makes them a safe therapy for allergies; it also helps prevent heart disease and reduce high blood pressure.

Mushroom:
The power of mushrooms comes from their ability to enhance the activity of natural killer T cells (NKT). These NKTs attack and remove cells that are damaged or infected by a virus. Mushrooms are associated with decreasing most cancers and significantly reducing the risk of breast cancer in women. They prevent DNA damage, slow cancer or tumor growth, and prevent tumors from acquiring a blood supply.

Tomatoes:
Richest source of the exceptionally potent antioxidant lycopene, a substance that prevents cancer, particularly cancer of the prostate.Tomatoes also have high levels of beta carotene, an antioxidant that supports the immune system. They have high dietary fiber and taste delicious raw or cooked.

Liver Detoxification
Carrots are considered detox food, as it cleanses the liver. Carrots help reduce bile and fat storage in the liver. Carrot juice is recommended by medical experts as a detoxifier which improves blood quality and cleanses out liver. Gall bladder, which works in close association with liver, also reaps the benefits of detoxification.

Carrot juice is useful when a person contracts Jaundice. Jaundice is known to damage liver and its associated organs’ functioning. Consuming carrot juice is very good for body as it cleanses out the liver. Also, pale colored skin, a characteristic of Jaundice, is a result of imbalance in bile flow through liver and gall bladder. Carrot juice detoxifies liver, thus improving skin complexion.

Reduce Cancer Risk
Carotenoids, the anti-oxidant in which carrots are rich, are regarded as cancer fighter elements as they aid in normal cell growth and maintenance process.  Controlling irregular growth of cells, carotenoids prevent many types of cancers such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, oral cancers, bladder cancers etc.

Prevent Infection
Raw carrot or boiled are applied on cuts and wounds as an antiseptic. Carrot juice has been found to be effective against a number of infections such as tonsillitis, infections of the digestive tracts and skin infections. It also increases the body’s immunity to fight when it comes in contact with infection causing agents.

Adding some rock-salt or plain salt to the juice is also popular among people who love spices. This gives the juice a tangy-sugary taste to enjoy.

It is usually advised to take the juice in most fresh form but since carrot is not a perennial vegetable, tetra pack juice and cans are also commercially successful.

Carrot juices are thin, opaque and taste best when consumed chill. Best way to store the juice, if needed, is in a freezer.

Precautions:
Carrot juice, though one of the best vegetable juices around, requires some precautions for a specific set of people. A glass of carrot juice will approximate contain only 80 calories but since a major of those calories comes from sugars, the juice becomes a concern for those suffering from sugar related health problems.

Also, since juice is a blend of several natural compounds, a person who is allergic to one of them, would in turn be allergic to the juice too. Consumption of carrot juice is hence, not advisable to these people.

This juice is one of those natural drinks which are well beneficial when taken in limited quantities. Unless specified by a doctor, one does not need to take more than 1 glass of carrot juice in day.

NATURAL HOMEMADE SUNSCREEN

Most sunscreens contain toxic ingredients or endocrine disrupting chemicals that in many cases may actually promote skin cancer growth and free radical production in the body. In fact, in the years since sunscreen use began, skin cancer rates have actually risen, and a 2007 document from the FDA stated that: “The FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer” In fact, many reports show that most sunscreens actually raise skin cancer risk.

Even natural, commercially available sunscreens often have toxic ingredients!

Considering many people these days are actually Vitamin D deficient, I consider lack of sun exposure to be a much bigger problem than too much exposure. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to many types of cancers including the most deadly types of breast cancer. Lack of Vitamin D has also been linked to problems during pregnancy including pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, premature labor, and more.

As a society, we’ve literally cut off our nose to spite our face when it comes to sun exposure. To avoid skin cancer, which is not a particularly deadly cancer, especially if caught early, we’ve shunned the sun and the Vitamin D our bodies produce with sun exposure.

On top of that, sun exposure itself is not conclusively linked to skin cancer, and many other factors, such as Omega-6 Vegetable Oil consumption can have a big impact on skin health!

In most cases, my approach to sun exposure is to get adequate daily exposure, without getting close to the point of burning. Since most of us don’t work outside these days, it actually takes effort to get daily sun, rather than to avoid it.

In the event that I’m going to be out in the sun for much longer than my skin is used to, it is often easy enough to just put on a hat or shirt to shield my skin.

If none of these options are available, for instance, on a day at the beach in early summer before I’ve been in the sun much, I will very occasionally use natural sunscreen. I’m yet to use it this year, and hope not to at all, but I wanted to share my recipe so that if you are in the sun for extended periods of time this summer, you have a natural option.

This would also be a more natural alternative for really young children, those taking medication that increases sun burn risk, or those who burn very easily.

Just to clarify, even though this natural sunscreen smells great and is naturally moisturizing, I don’t recommend using it daily since the Vitamin D you get from the sun will be more beneficial in the long run!

So ditch those store-bought sunscreens and try your hand at making your own natural sunscreen in your very own kitchen!

NOTE: This is an improved recipe since many people were having trouble getting the temperatures exactly right to get the lotion to emulsify (as per the comments below). This recipe will not have any of those issues!

Natural Homemade Sunscreen Ingredients:

1/2 cup almond or olive oil (can infuse with herbs first if desired)
1/4 cup coconut oil (natural SPF 4)
1/4 cup beeswax
2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (This is a non-nano version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to inhale the powder). This makes a natural SPF of 20+ or more can be added.)
Optional: 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
Optional: 2 tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF 4-5)
Optional: Essential Oils, Vanilla Extract or other natural extracts to suit your preference

How to Make Natural Sunscreen:

Combine ingredients except zinc oxide in a pint sized or larger glass jar. I have a mason jar that I keep just for making lotions and lotion bars, or you can even reuse a glass jar from pickles, olives, or other foods. Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat. Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.

As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to incorporate. When all ingredients are completely melted, add the zinc oxide, stir in well and pour into whatever jar or tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars (pint size) are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump!
Stir a few times as it cools to make sure zinc oxide is incorporated.

Use as you would regular sunscreen. Best if used within six months.

Additional Notes:
This sunscreen is somewhat, but not completely, waterproof and will need to be reapplied after sweating or swimming. Make sure not to inhale the Zinc Oxide- use a mask if necessary!

This recipe has an SPF of about 20, though adding more Zinc Oxide will increase the SPF. Add more beeswax to make thicker sunscreen, less to make smooth sunscreen. I recommend coconut or vanilla extract or lavender essential oils for fragrance. Store in a cool, dry place or in the fridge.

The following is another customizable homemade sunscreen recipe which uses oils (each with their own natural SPF properties), beeswax (for waterproofness), butters (for creaminess), and essential oils (for a scent-u-ous experience). If you want extra protection, add a non-nano zinc oxide powder which lends its SPF of 20+.

3/4 cup oil: Use any blend of the following: raspberry seed oil (natural SPF 30-50), carrot seed oil (natural SPF 30), wheat germ oil (natural SPF 20), or sesame, coconut, hemp, soy, peanut, or avocado oil (all of which have a natural SPF of 4-10)
1/4 cup beeswax
2 tablespoons butter: Use any combination of shea butter (natural SPF 30), mango butter, or cocoa butter
1 teaspoon vitamin E oil: Optional for its antioxidant properties
20-30 drops essential oil: Choose your favourite scent
2 tablespoons non-nano zinc oxide powder:

This will give you SPF 20; add more if you want higher protection levels. Be careful not to inhale it.

To make your all-natural sunscreen, combine the first three ingredients in a glass jar, and melt together in a double-boiler style in a pot of water on the stove. Over medium heat with a lid on the jar, wait until everything has melted, then give the mixture a shake. Add the zinc oxide (if using), vitamin E oil, and essential oils and stir well. Pour into your chosen storage containers (small mason jars or recycled deodorant dispensers make good options) and let cool, stirring now and then to ensure the zinc oxide doesn't sink to the bottom. Use as you would regular sunscreen. Shelf life: 6 months.

An Even Faster Way To Make Sunscreen:

Get a bottle of your favorite lotion (that doesn't contain citrus oils!)
Add a couple Tablespoons of Zinc Oxide
Mix well
Use as Sunscreen

A word of caution, however. Experts in skin cancer have pointed out that the science behind proportions of ingredients in today’s traditional sunscreens is fairly exacting in order to achieve the desired protection. Making your own natural sunscreen at home that ensures blockage of UV rays to verifiable SPF levels can be nigh unto impossible, which may leave you vulnerable to the sun’s damaging effects. If you want to avoid this hazard as well as the hazards of traditional sunscreen, your best bet is to cover up and stand in the shade!

FEW THINGS TO AVOID WHEN DRUNK

Drinking may be fun, but ensure that you don't have to bear the consequences

Respond to anything that's work-related
No matter how capable you think you are, just don’t do it. Any mistake will be instantly explained by the  reply time. You really don't want to mix business with pleasure. Sometimes, it is necessary to use certain language while writing an official mail and you may just type things that you don't mean to. Ensure that your drunken state doesn't affect your career.

Talk to your Ex
Most people get highly emotional after a few drinks and dialing your ex will seem to be the perfect solution. Resist that temptation. It never helps to keep blabbering when you are high. In fact, you may end up squashing all chances of resurrecting your relationship with your drunken talk.

Have a fight
When drunk, you may think that anyone who disagrees with you is committing a crime. But that is not the time to go about serving justice. Make sure that spats stay verbal and don't reach the physical level. You may not just end up with a black eye, but also a broken bone or two.

Drunken driving
This one is extremely serious. Not only are you risking your own life, but also that of others in the car and those who are out on the road or in other vehicles. Make sure that you either take a cab back home or have a sober friend, who can take over the task. It's not macho to drive when you are drunk.

Click pictures and upload them online
You do lose inhibitions when you are drunk, but if your drunken revelry finds its way online, it may cause a lot of trouble. Pictures that are loaded online can never be completely wiped off. You wouldn't want your boss to see your party pictures, right?

Declare your undying love to your friend/flatmate/stranger
This has the potential to get really, really awkward, especially when the declaration is followed by you falling over, being sick or calling the recipient the wrong name. Painfully cringe worthy apologies in the morning are guaranteed to follow.

Get flirty with a stranger
Beauty does lie in the eye of the beer holder, but the illusion is bound to wear off once the beer haze passes away. You may end up regretting your actions the morning after your drunken revelry and do, what is known as, the 'walk of shame'.

Drunk texting
Whether it's your friend or someone you are interested in, don't start a conversation with someone when you are drunk. You never know when your rather 'high' spirits may lead you into some big trouble.

Change your password
Of all the things to forget about the previous night, the fact that your email’s new password is “burgerkingroxxx” is one of the most costly.

Make friends with strangers in bars
Whilst they might be a laugh for a couple of hours, and may even buy you drinks, more often than not they will expect you to come back to theirs for ‘a cup of tea’. Bear in mind: if they show slight attraction to you, A CUP OF TEA DOES NOT JUST MEAN A CUP OF TEA. You may spend the whole walk home desperately trying to shake them off your tail.
